OFFSHORE WIND FARMS can tame hurricanes...read an interesting USA Today
article on how large numbers of offshore wind turbines might reduce the
force of hurricane winds and storm surges. Small wind farms off the New
Jersey coastline have been proposed, but none have been built yet. Find the
article here:

ALONG THE PARKWAY large steel beams have been driven into the ground to
eventually support overpasses for the southbound lanes in Cape May Court
House. When the southbound overpasses are built, traffic will be shifted to
those lanes so northbound overpasses can be constructed.
Elsewhere on the Parkway, the rest stop at milepost 18 has been demolished.
A new one will be constructed in its place, containing new restaurant and
fueling facilities. It is expected to open by the summer.
One more beautiful scene from Long & Foster friend Stephen Zarycranski. Who
among us isn′t ready for a walk on the beach?
CALLING ALL BOATERS! A boating safety certificate is required for all who
operate a vessel in New Jersey waters. A safe boating class is being offered
by the Coast Guard Auxiliary on March 15th. See the Upcoming Events list for
details. Other classes are offered around the state at different times.
LOCAL CABLE CHANNEL 2 becomes Channel 97 today. Channel 97 will broadcast
the same local information that has been on Channel 2.
STONE HARBOR SHIVER: if you missed Sea Isle City′s Polar Bear Plunge, have
no fear...the Stone Harbor Shiver is just a couple of weeks away! Don’t
worry, the ocean has "warmed up” to 40 degrees!
LIBRARY CORRECTION: Last week incorrect information about Stone Harbor′s
Library was reported in local media. To set the record straight, Council has
received a set of plans for the new library, but those plans still need to
be reviewed by the design committee.

Harbor′s new library were released earlier this month, and have been
finalized. After years of planning and discussion of various potential
sites, including a beachfront location, the Borough committed in 2012 to the
location of the former Bank of America Building at 96th Street and Second
Avenue. Stay tuned for more news on library progress!

who use their vacation homes for various business purposes. In
addition to providing relaxation and an escape from daily stress, executives
report hosting important business meetings at their vacation homes, as well
as taking advantage of quiet settings to strategize about business issues.

What’s wrong with this picture? See
below for an explanation!
DUMP TRUCKS are making
use of a temporary roadway across the marsh leading to Macchia’s Island
behind Avalon. Macchia’s Island is now being emptied of dredge
material stored from prior dredge projects, as up to 50 dump truck loads a
day are carried from the site. Once emptied Macchia’s Island can be
reused for upcoming back-bay dredging in Avalon. The temporary roadway
will eventually be removed and the marsh restored.
POLAR BEAR PLUNGE!
Sea Isle City will hold its 20th Annual Polar Bear
Plunge this Saturday. In addition to the traditional Plunge, look for
entertainment, food, and drink at various Sea Isle locations all weekend
long. In a month Stone Harbor will follow with its annual Stone Harbor
Shiver. If you’re contemplating taking a plunge in the ocean, consider
this: the ocean water temperature is a bone chilling 36 degrees!
FREE BEACH TAGS FOR VETERANS:
The Borough of Avalon will consider a draft ordinance at its next meeting
providing free beach tags to veterans of the US Military. If approved
the ordinance would be in effect for the 2014 season, and would require
military veterans to show proper documentation in order to receive their
free beach tag.
THE TOWNSEND
INLET BRIDGE is closed for repair work. The bridge is
receiving $4 million in structural and mechanical repairs, and is expected
to reopen about April 30th. If you are travelling from Avalon to Sea
Isle City, or vice versa, allow extra travel time to take the long way
around!
The orange and purple hues of a wintertime
sunset are reflected in ice and snow coating the back bays. Rain and
warmer temperatures have since melted the ice and snow.
RESORT HOUSE
ORDINANCE: Avalon Borough Council will
introduce a new resort house
ordinance at its next meeting on February 12th.
The borough previously held public meetings to solicit input on the topic,
and will post a copy of the proposed ordinance at
www.AvalonBoro.net prior to the
February 12th meeting.
A.C. BOAT SHOW:
Jump start the boating season with a midwinter
visit to the Atlantic City Boat show, which runs through Sunday.
Dozens of manufacturers, dealers, and vendors will exhibit power and
sailboats at the Atlantic City Convention Center. Numerous seminars
are also offered each day, covering a variety of topics for beginners
through experienced boaters. Visit
www.ACBoatshow.com for details.
SNOWY OWLS
have been spotted numerous times on local beaches.
An article by Fox News indicates that this years migration of snowy owls is
exceptionally large, with the birds having been spotted as far south as
Florida. Read the article here:
