SAND PUMPING is underway on Avalon's north-end beaches. A dredge is stationed in Townsend's Inlet and began pumping sand onto the beach several days ago. As the project progresses along the beach, areas surrounding the work zone will be closed, with other sections remaining open. It won't be long until newly replenished beaches provide more recreation area for beachgoers as well as enhanced protection to the Island in the event of storms.

Townsend Inlet Bridge Dredge
The dredge "Illinois" is stationed in the inlet. The Townsend's Inlet Bridge is just behind the dredge.

THE TOWNSEND'S INLET BRIDGE is expected to finally reopen this week, after undergoing repairs for the past several months. Crews are "shimming" the bridge components to align them properly.  For the latest update from the Borough of Avalon, click here: Townsend’s Inlet Bridge Update: County Announces Opening Latter Part of Week of June 22.

BOARDWALKS--WHY? Ever wonder why the first boardwalk was built along the ocean in nearby Atlantic City? Like so many other things "down the shore," boardwalks owe their existence to the railroads that first brought visitors to the area, and the hotels that developers built to house those visitors. Atlantic City's boardwalk was conceived as a simple way to prevent visitors from tracking sand into hotel lobbies and railroad cars after spending a day at the beach. For more on the boardwalks in Atlantic City, Ocean City, and Wildwood, click here: Walking The Planks.

TURTLE TIME! Turtles are still present on local roads as they seek high ground on which to lay eggs. Some roads are protected by turtle fences but many are not. If you spot a turtle, slow down to avoid them. If you stop to help one cross the road, please first ensure your own safety, then help the turtle cross in the direction it was originally travelling.

OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURES are in the low sixties now--still a bit chilly, but warming up. Longer hours of daylight and southerly breezes help warm up the surf temperature at this time of year.

HOW DO YOU MOVE AN OSPREY NEST? Very carefully! When an osprey nest was discovered on the roof of an Avalon home, Hans, Holly, and Hanna Toft were called to help safely move the nest from the roof top to a nesting platform in the marsh. Hans Toft was a natural science teacher, now retired from the Cape May County Technical High School. Daughters Holly and Hanna now teach there.  Local boaters may remember Holly and Hanna from their years of working at Smuggler's Cove in Stone Harbor. See the full Atlantic City Press Story here: Moving Day Arrives for Avalon Rooftop Osprey Family.

Sand Fences
Sand fences create a distinct "zig-zag" pattern in front of the dunes. The fences trap sand, building up the dunes, which help to protect the Island during storms.
